esXpress can be configured to use ‘gzip’ or ‘lzop’ to compress your backups. You’ll have to make a space versus speed decision to determine what works best for you. If you configure esXpress to use ‘gzip’, the standard Linux compression, most backups will be 10%-40% of the original size for FULLs. DELTAs are around 5% of the size of the FULL. For example: • 25 Hosts, 8 TB of VMDK files. • Full backup = 900 GB of compressed VMDK files. • 1st Delta = 38 GB day 1 • By the end of the month the Deltas are up to 170 GB per day. If you configure esXpress to use ‘lzop’, you backups will tend to be a little larger than those made with ‘gzip’, but will compress much faster.
