I assume you mean budget here as opposed to salary issues which I won’t get into. In the field, budgets vary vastly for productions. They depend on a wide variety of circumstances as well as on how you account for things. When I used to work on what is now the last surviving original showboat, the “Majestic” in Cincinnati, our budgets were $300 per show! BUT that was in the 1970s; we didn’t count labor in the budget; and the stage was only 16 feet wide. So even with $300, our shows looked lavish to audiences in that time and place. By contrast, working on shows in a union scene shop situation, can elevate the budget quite a bit. In the 1980s I designed a production of Amadeus for a professional, non-profit theatre. Their staff and shops were all in-house and thus the labor costs were not a factor. The show cost $4,000 to build.
