What is the APF?
The Asosyasyon Peyizan Fondwa (Peasant Association of Fondwa) was created in 1988 by a committee of nine peasants brought together by Fr. Joseph Philippe to confront the community’s common problems. Since its inception, the APF has tested and developed a model of sustainable agrarian development adapted to the rural areas of Haiti. It built the road that connects Fondwa to the main highway, constructed the area’s largest school, brought the first health clinic and pharmacy to the area, has planted more than half a million trees, among many other projects. It is based on community participation, with the association being divided into 17 peasant groups, two women’s groups, and a youth group that undertake projects on the local level. The University of Fondwa is based largely on the lessons of the APF, and is Fondwa’s means of sharing its experience with the rest of the country.
