Based on historical yields from other F1 hybrid crops such as corn, Sumatra Bioscience expects yields from F1 oil palm hybrids to triple that of a conventional seed. Currently, industry estimates places average yield for oil palm at 3.7 metric tonnes/ ha. The physiological potential for oil palm is over 18 metric tonnes/ha and F1 varieties have the potential to achieve such yield. For corn, the F1 hybridisation method has increased yields from 1.5 tonnes/ha in 1925 to 5.5 tonnes/ha in 1975.
