What is the America Reads Program, administered through the Service Learning Office?
The America Reads program is a federal program in which university students are asked to tutor elementary school children in reading and writing. Students who get federal work-study money can get paid for tutoring and training. However, the program also accepts volunteers. FWS students start at $8.00 per hour and can be raised to $8.50. This is an excellent experience for students who plan to teach or work with children in some capacity after they graduate. Students receive basic and enrichment training and attend support meetings. FWS students also get paid for attending this training. Students must have their own transportation; however there is one school within walking distance.
