What Is the Alien Registration Act?
The Alien Registration Act, signed in 1940 and later codified in the United States Code, represented a federal law regulating expression of ideas. The law also required all alien residents in the United States over 14 years of age to file a comprehensive statement of their personal and occupational status and a record of their political beliefs. The legislation originated from the efforts of House Representative Howard Smith of Virginia.
