What Is The Alfonso Top Scorer Trophy In Basketball?
The Alfonso Top scorer trophy is a relatively new addition to the basketball game, being first created in 2005. The trophy was named in honour of the championship basketball player of the same name, who died of leukaemia in 2004. It is awarded in European League basketball only, and at the end of each season. The panel that decides the award of the trophy consists of top coaches. The criteria used to decide who the trophy should be awarded to, is solely statistics based and it is, in fact, the only statistic based trophy awarded in the European League. The minimum requirement is that the player is played for 12 or more games. The number of baskets scored is accumulated and then divided by the number of games played to give an average score. The player with the highest game average receives the trophy. Previous winners were Charles Smith in 2005, and Drew Nicholas in 2006.
