What is the ALCPT?
The ALCPT is a standardized multiple-choice test of listening and reading proficiency in English. It is similar to the ECL in its design and format. Unlike the ECL, which can be obtained and administered only by designated TCOs (U.S. citizens who work for the U.S. government), the ALCPT is available for purchase by educational institutions and is used in many language learning programs worldwide. When administered under controlled conditions, the ALCPT yields scores that are comparable to those of the ECL. Indeed, one of the ALCPTs many practical uses is that of a screening test, to ensure that candidates who are to take the ECL have already attained a reasonable measure of proficiency. This screening procedure ensures minimal exposure of the ECL and efficient scheduling of candidates for ECL testing. 8.
