12-16 years of age, maybe even 17, seems like a good age range. Not only because of the slightly mature content, but because of how it’s written. Scott Westerfeld uses words from the future – like newsfeed and wallscreen and such – and never stops to explain what these things are. It’s up to the reader to figure it out, and I don’t think an elementary school kid is capable of doing so. Then again, the age range is pretty rough “assumption”, if you will. it really depends on how strong a reader the person is, which can be calculated through lexile. The lexile score for the Uglies is in the low 700’s, and even knowing that, you can’t really assume what grade level that book is best for, merely because one’s lexile score has nothing to do with what grade they’re in. Other than a lexile score, it depends on the maturity, someone who can’t handle romantic scenes and just snickers that person might laugh immaturely when reading it – merely because the book lightly mentions such romantic affa
