American children live in an “all-pervasive sexualized media environment” that produces a “tremendous amount of inadvertent exposure to pornography and other adult sexual media.” Teenagers are routinely exposed to values on the Internet that would disturb many parents; teens often search the Internet for information about sex that they would be embarrassed to discuss with an adult. Race is another popular topic in teen chat rooms. A special issue of the Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology devoted to research on children and the electronic media, conducted at the National Science Foundation-funded Children’s Digital Media Center, includes these findings, among many others.
