What is the age cutoff for becoming a firefighter?

It depends on where you are testing. In NYC you have to be 29 or younger (you can be 34 if you spent 5 yrs in the military) I’ve seen a few departments that have an upper age limit, but most do not. I tested and got hired at 38 and there were 2 guys older than me in my recruit class. Having some life experience will help you in your job too, so they aren’t just looking for guys who will last the longest. A fire department needs a variety of personalities (because the public, for which we work, is widely varied). They need firefighters that are dedicated and who love their job. Being a veteran and in great shape are huge pluses for getting hired. Start thinking about which cities you’d like to live/work in and go to their website and find out when the next time they will be testing. You can do this definitely.
