Chlorophyll a’s mainfunction is to transformed the light energy into chemical energy. The other types of chlorophylls only have the capability to capture the light of different wavelength and direct it to the chl. a. Green plants usually use red light (with average energy) for photosynthesis but as algae live at different depth into water, they must have pigments that are capable to capture light with smaller wavelength, and thus with higher energy, as only these would penetrate the water at the given depth.
