What is the advantage and disadvantage of online bookstores?
Online bookstores tend to have a very large selection of books. Also, if an online bookstore sells a high volume of books, their prices tend to be cheaper than physical/brick-n-mortar retailers. Downsides are that all transactions involve harming the environment due to shipping and packing costs, and that buying from large, national, online retailers can harm small local bookstores.
Advantage: you don’t have to leave home, you may be able to find ‘hard to find’ books, may be able to get free shipping and handling on particular books, used book pricing. Disadvantage: paying for shipping and handling (unless you can find one that doesn’t charge these fees – sometimes it is only for certain books), books may not show up in the condition that you thought it would (pages missing, used book when you wanted new, etc.), book never arrives. If I buy a book online it usually through Barnes and Noble. I have, occasionally, bought books from other companies because of the price. You have to look around for a decent price.
