What is the ACLU position on the use of biometrics?
According to an interview with Barry Steinhardt, Assoc Director of the ACLU, “The ACLU generally does not oppose the use of biometrics for authentication purposes, but holds that the collection and uses of biometric data should be subject to certain principles; for instance fair information principles to protect the data from unauthorized uses.” Ultra-Scan biometric systems protect data from unauthorized use. In fact, ultrasonic scanning for finger matching does not require that fingerprint images be retained on file in the database or system.
