The access road from the Mt Aspiring Road turn off to the base building is 7km long. It is a gravel road that is maintained regularly. A 4WD vehicle is not necessary and it is fine to drive up the road in a 2WD. However youa are required to carry chains and fit them when necessary if weather and snow conditions are poor. If chains are required this will be advertised at the bottom of the road . Chains are not available for hire at the bottom of the Treble Cone road. You will need to hire or purchase them in Wanaka. They are available for hire from Outside Sports or Hirequip. If you are in a rental vehicle ensure the chains fit before leaving the depot. A few minutes practice can make a huge difference! Road and parking access is free to all users.
