What is the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP) program?
A1. The overall objective of the ASEP program is to promote maximum sustainable employment for Aboriginal people on major economic developments leading to lasting benefits for Aboriginal communities, families, and individuals. ASEP is a nationally managed, opportunity-driven, and project-based program that promotes increased participation of Aboriginal people in major economic developments through a collaborative Aboriginal, private-sector, and provincial/territorial partnership approach. ASEP supports multi-year training strategies developed by Aboriginal organizations and industry employers, leading to long-term skilled jobs for Aboriginal people in existing and emerging economic opportunities such as mining, oil and gas, forestry, construction, fisheries, and tourism. The ASEP program received an initial investment of $85 million over five years in 2003, resulting in nine projects. In 2007, ASEP was expanded by $105 million and extended to March 31, 2012.
