What is the 4 Blocks Balanced Literacy Model?
Reading instruction is taught through the 4 Blocks Balanced Literacy model. We have blocks of time for Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Working with Words, and Writing. Children all learn to read in many different ways. We feel at Eisenhower Elementary that this approach will reach all the different ways children learn. During the Guided Reading time we will work on comprehension skills. Self-Selected Reading is just that…the students select what they read and are reading at their on level. This is a time when they can practice the comprehension skills learned in the Guided Reading Block. Working with Words is where we work on Phonics skills. Writing Block is a time many different wiring skills will be introduced along with grammar.
