What is Thameslink?
70% of all rail journeys begin and end in London and passenger numbers have grown by some 40% over the last ten years. This has resulted in some peak services being quite crowded, but unfortunately, our ability to run more and longer trains is constrained by the infrastructure available. The Southeast’s population is also predicted to grow by nearly one million people over the next 20 years and this is likely to put even more pressure on rail services, particularly on the approaches to London Bridge. Thameslink will increase the infrastructure available by lengthening platforms, upgrading signalling and laying new lines. This will allow Southeastern and other train operators to run more services, reduce crowding and offer passengers more journey choices. The work, carried out by Network Rail, will deliver new stations, new track, extend platforms and upgrade signalling and represents £3.55 billion of Government investment into the rail network.
