What is Tenebrae?
– The service of Tenebrae follows a tradition of the Church dating back to the 8th century. From Latin, tenebrae means “darkness” and commemorates the final hours of our Lord’s life on earth, as he suffered death on the cross. The service begins with the church in candlelight. During the service of readings, prayers and music, the candles are gradually extinguished. Finally, the Christ Candle is removed from sight and a time of silence observed. Then the “strepitus” is heard, a loud noise signifying the close of the tomb and the earthquake. The Christ Candle is returned to its stand, a foreshadowing of the Resurrection. Easter Egg Hunt – The Easter Egg Hunt will be held for our children after the 10:00am Mass on Easter Sunday. We invite St. John’s families to be a part of this celebration with their children. We are also in need of plastic eggs and small wrapped candy to fill them. Parishioners wishing to donate these items may bring them to the Parish Office. Thank you for your genero
