What is tempera paint?
If you’ve painted a poster for a school project, odds are you’ve used tempera paint. Tempera or egg tempera dates back as early as Egyptian sarcophagi and was succeeded by oil painting in the 1500’s. Tempera is a quick-drying medium consisting of a powdered pigment mixed with water, glue, honey, curdled milk or egg yolk. The levels of the mixture had to be adjusted regularly to maintain even color.
