What Is TED?
TED (The Energy Detective) is a simple, yet extremely accurate, home energy monitor that allows you to see electricity usage in real-time. The Training and Employee Development (TED) Center provides comprehensive in-service training and training resources for GCC faculty and staff, and to our neighboring sister campuses at EMCC, PC, & PVCC. Training and workshops are available on desktop computer programs, college management information systems, E-mail, World Wide Web, and other Internet resources, and telephone and voice mail technologies. In addition to regularly scheduled workshops, customized training and individual assistance are available. All employees are invited to utilize the resources in the TED Center, located in HT2-139, on the GCC campus. Computers are equipped with the latest software. Equipment available includes: fully networked Administrative Windows and Macintosh computers connected to laser printers, four Instructional Palette computers, fax machine, scanner, color printer, and a courtesy phone. TED (TEmplated Database) is a hosting service that provides an online home for specialized collections catalogs which do not fit within the scope of existing Harvard catalog systems: HOLLIS Catalog (library bibliographic data), VIA (cultural heritage images), OASIS (manuscript and archival finding aids), and HGL (geospatial data). Using XML technology, TED allows a curator to create a standard database for a collection, define a structured data format, and easily customize screens and parameters for search and display. This data can be maintained directly in TED or batch loaded from an external source. TED offers a web-based public interface that enables end-users to search, browse, view result sets, and retrieve records for items in a collection, as well as link out to digital objects when such links are provided. TED stands for “Technology, Entertainment, Design.” It started out in 1984 as aconference bringing together people from those worlds. Since then, its scopehas become even broader. This annual conference brings together the world’smost fascinating thinkers and doers and challenges them to give the talk oftheir lives. Talks from the conference are now made available online, for free, and have been watched more than 35 million times worldwide.
