Tattooing works by reciprocating needles passing repeatedly through the surface of the skin. If a tattoo artists is too “heavy handed” (that is, tattooing too deep, or needlessly spending too much time in a given area, grinding it up), the tattoo will heal with some degree of scarring. This can be done on purpose as well. If a design is drawn on the skin, and is then tattooed in very hard without the use of ink (using either nothing, just water, or even an exfoliant abrasive), it will heal as a scar. Depending on the amount of destruction that is done, this scar may be anything from a “normal” raised scar to nothing more than a slightly discoloured patch. What is the Mamiya technique? The Mamiya technique, named after its creator Eizo Mamiya (not by his request I should add), is more commonly known as “Dremel scarification” since it is often done using the Dremel hobby tool.
