What is Take Back the Night (TBTN)?
TBTN rallies and marches were one of the first political actions to come out of the anti- rape movement in the 1970s. The first TBTN event was held in Germany in 1973 in response to a series of sexual assaults, rapes, and femicides. In Canada, Take Back the Night was held in Quebec in 1981. Take Back the Night is now a worldwide event of protest. TBTN is a profound symbolic statement of our community to stopping the tide of violence against women and children. We demand that perpetrators of such violence from rapists to batterers to child molesters to pornographers – be held responsible for their actions. • TBTN is an opportunity to join together our voices, our strengths and our outrage at the violence in our communities. • At TBTN we march with women and children to demand an end to the violence and sexist oppression of women in our communities and across the world. The threat of aggression and violence alters the meaning and feeling of the day and the night for women. Across Canada
