What is Tai Chi Ch’uan?
Tai Chi Ch’uan is a system of philosophy, psychology, breathing, therapy, meditation, self-defence, relaxation, posture, and balance developed over 2,000 years ago. In its active form it is different from the normal Western form of exercise in that it does not tire you out. Normal exercises are dominated by force and effort making you develop fitness through stressing your systems. This increases wear and tear on your organs and muscles and joints. Tai Chi Ch’uan leaves you with more energy and emphasises smooth movements and breathing. The common perception is the image of elderly people in parks moving very slowly. Yes this is Tai Chi Ch’uan but only a very small part of it. Most classes only teach the slow movements and a token gesture of self-defence. We teach as much of the full system as possible with a balanced approach to all aspects.
