What is Taekwon-Do and how is it different from other martial arts?
Taekwon-Do is a fairly new martial art. It was designed over a number of years by our late founder, General Choi Hong-Hi, who held a black belt in Japanese Karate and the ancient Korean style of Taek Kyon. Our art was given its official name of Taekwon-Do by a board of scholars and martial arts masters in 1955. Over the next 10 years, General Choi dedicated his time to the further development of Taekwon-Do and the training of his senior students who eventually helped to spread Taekwon-do to the rest of the world. In 1966, General Choi officially formed the organization now known as the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF). All martial arts teach self-defense, moral culture, and respect. Most martial arts teach students how to kick and punch. Some martial arts attract students because of their fancy flips and acrobatics.
