What is Swine Flu or influenza A (H1N1)?
Swine Flu is an acute respiratory disease of pigs caused by one of four different type A influenza viruses. Most recent swine flu viruses have belonged to the H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes. The new influenza A (H1N1) may have its origins in swine but it’s now being transmitted person to person. It contains genes from swine, bird, and human flu bugs, in addition to genes from Eurasian swine flu viruses that aren’t supposed to be in North America.
