What is sustainable development (SD)?
Sustainable Development (SD) seeks to improve human well-being over the long term, from the social, economic, and environmental viewpoints. It was originally summarized by the Bruntland Commission in 1987, as “development that meets the needs of the present generation without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to meet their needs”. In 1992, the Sustainomics framework broadly described SD as “a process for improving the range of opportunities that will enable individual human beings and communities to achieve their aspirations and full potential over a sustained period of time, while maintaining the resilience of economic, social and environmental systems.” This definition recognizes that development of economic, social and ecological systems depends on expanding the set of opportunities for their improvement.
