What is Surface Area? Why do I care about Surface Area?

Surface area is the total amount of surface on an object where beneficial bacteria can set up residence and process water chemistry. We want a lot of surface area in our biological filter media so it may house more beneficial bacteria. A 1-1/2″ bio-ball with its pins has nearly 2 sq. ft. of total surface area as compared to a solid ball of the same diameter which has about .12 sq. ft. of surface area.
