What is Supercritical fluid extraction?
CO2 extraction products have a higher purity and potency than most types of extraction and is favored by the pharmaceutical industry. The process is started with carbon dioxide CO2 pumped as a gas into a pressure chamber containing the plant material. Then the pressure builds up in the vessel and causes the carbon dioxide to condense into a liquid. The liquid CO2 acts as a solvent and extracts the oils from the plant material. When the pressure is released from the CO2 it reverts to its gaseous state and leaves the extract behind without any resides. This method uses lower temperatures preserving valuable nutrients. It provides some materials like gums and resins in an easier to handle form.
