What is Suez Crisis and why did it happen?
Basically this is the scene in 1957. The Cold War is in gear and Gamel Nasser was president of Egypt, having recently overthrown the Monarchy. The USA and UK were funding the build of the Aswan dam to give Egypt hydroelectricity. However things took a turn for the worst when Nasser signed a large arms deal the Czechs, who at that time were communists, the sworn enemy of the United States. The Americans and British were disgusted that Nasser had done this, and he didn’t help the situation when he diplomatically recognised the People’s Republic of China, also full of dirty commies. The US and UK abruptly halted funding for the dam. Nasser now had a huge black hole in his country’s finances. He decided to nationalise the Suez Canal, which was jointly owned by the governments of the UK and France.
