What is subsea, or underwater, technology?
Subsea technology provides a way to explore the depths of the ocean that scuba divers cannot reach with standard equipment. It involves the use of hi-tech mechanical equipment and technological advancements to assist in human exploration of deepwater areas to assess fish stocks, classify habitats, monitor underwater pollution and commercially develop marine resources. There is a close connection between the technology used to explore the deepsea and the equipment used to venture into space. Why is subsea technology important? Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and contain approximately 97 percent of the Earth’s water. They influence our weather systems and ecology, are a vital source of renewable energy, contain a significant amount of minerals and are a valuable source of food. Despite these facts, we know very little about deep-water life. Technological advancements show that the deep sea is home to many species and may even have more biodiversity than rainfores
