What is stratification?
Stratification is when the sun heats the top of the pond/lake water and yet the cooler water stays below. The top water gets oxygen because it’s close to the surface where oxygen is at and the bottom portion of the water becomes anaerobic (without oxygen). It’s important to destratify (or break up) these layers. The cooler, dense water at the bottom becomes depleted of oxygen and this is where your fish as well as your organic “compost” from decaying pond weeds, fallen leaves, etc. are at. The fish may die due to inadequate oxygenation and the “compost” will turn into muck or nasty, smelly sludge. You can add aeration and destratification to you pond by using a floating water fountain that suits your size of pond. We suggest either our Kasco Floating Water Fountains or our Stratovators.
