what is stopping the Government from implementing Kimberly Process (KP) recommendations to avoid punitive measures?
OM: That issue is very sensitive. We have just received the full report from KP, which we are still studying. The matters are being handled by a Ministerial taskforce but we will take actions to abide by KP recommendations. Q: What is the situation regarding legislation? Are you still going ahead with the controversial amendments to mining laws? OM: The Bill is going through a consultative process. We are consulting stakeholders. There was a conference in Kariba last month organised by Parliamentarians. We are comparing, through consultation, with the region on how their laws have been formulated and we are receiving input from members of the public. I think we will bring it to Parliament in the next Session. Q: Almost all mines closed down last year because of the economic situation. What is state of the mining industry now? OM: All the mines that had closed are re-opening. I have been assured by chief executive officers from these mines about their desire to re-open the closed mines.
