What is Staph. aureus bacteraemia surveillance?
Bacteraemia means the presence of bacteria in blood. Simply, Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia surveillance is the monitoring of the rates of the Staph. aureus bacteria in patient blood samples. Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) are two of the types of Staph. aureus bacteria that may be detected and specific data for these are recorded also. Special blood samples are taken from patients in hospitals who show symptoms of infection with Staph. aureus, these are then tested in the laboratory for the presence of the bacteria. More information about bacteraemias, Staphylococcus aureus, MRSA and MSSA can be found in the About Healthcare Associated Infections and Infection Information for Health Boards in Wales sections of this website. Data from this surveillance scheme have been fed back to infection control professionals in Health Boards in Wales. Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia blood stream infection reports by indi
