Quarterback Brian Brohm could have started fresh on Sunday, taking a practice-squad offer from a new team in a new city far away from his struggles in Green Bay. Instead, Brohm stuck around for a practice-squad deal with the Packers, who cut him on Saturday but apparently are willing to keep trying to turn things around for their former second-round pick. “Brian is continuing to make progress,” General Manager Ted Thompson said in his media conference on Sunday afternoon. “I think his most recent preseason game (a 20-for-28 passing performance on Thursday at Tennessee) was his best outing. He is a competitor, he wants to be a good player and he wants to contribute to the Packers. Now that we have him on the practice squad, we’re going to continue that development. “We haven’t given up on him, and I don’t think he has given up, either.” ♦ Sign up for news, weather, Green Bay Packers and high school sports text alerts Once regarded as the possible No. 1 overall draft pick in the 2008 dra

The practice squad is essentially made up of players that football teams neither want to release or pay the high salary a regular player would demand. For instance, the Packers kept only two quarterbacks, starter Aaron Rodgers and backup Matt Flynn, on the 53-man roster. So unless they make a move in the coming days to add another, Brian Brohm in essence will open the season in the same No. 3 quarterback role he had for all 16 games as a rookie last season. The only differences are he won’t suit up on game day and will make a fraction of the salary — the practice-squad standard of $5,200 a week. Sources: http://www.greenbaypressgazette.
