What is SSL and when will it be available?
The Express client uses the TCP/IP Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Version 3.0 to encrypt the user-id and password plus any other information being sent between the AS/400 and the desktop. The Express client offers the flexibility to choose what is encrypted, for example, you may wish to encrypt data being transmitted via Data Transfer but find it unnecessary to encrypt data being sent to your PC printer via PC5250 printer emulation. With SSL support, these applications are now able to establish secure communications sessions with their corresponding services. Data exchanged between the clients and servers are encrypted, therefore, not subject to eavesdropping. Additionally, the Express client uses the AS/400 Server Authentication support so users can be assured that the system they are connecting to is the AS/400 system they intended to connect to.
