What is SSI for disabled people?
SSI is for people disabled since childhood and have never been able to work, or for people who did not work long enough to accumulate enough credits for SSDI and are too disabled to work. Children’s parent’s income counts toward what is counted as a child’s income. After a child turns 18 it depends on whether the child lives in the parent’s home and is supported or not. Adults who get SSI can not have resources beyond a home they live in (and can own), a non-luxury vehicle, and $2,000. If they have more income that what is allowed it can go into a PASS account that is for a specific job related expense- like education, a vehicle to get to work etc. An independent adult gets $637 federal benefit. Some states supplement it. A dependent adult gets less. 2 married people on SSI get less. You are still eligible to receive other aid, but it may count as income. Once your receive $85.00 in income your check is deducted by 50% of what you have earned over $85.00.
