What is SPS’s view of bikes in skateparks?
SPS supports development of bike-specific park facilities and opposes use of bikes in skateparks. We recognize that freestyle biking is a valid activity and attractive to some. Unfortunately, bike use in skateparks incontrovertibly displaces skaters – especially youth – and damages the facility. By example, bikes damaged features at Pier Park on the first day of public use and made one no longer functional to skaters after just one week of public use. In light of these facts, it’s self-evident to us that bikers need their own parks. SPS has made numerous offers over the last few years to bike riders to help organize and fundraise for a bike park, each of which has been rejected by bike riders.
