What is SPS Agreement of WTO?
The Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Measures is one of the four Agreements under WTO directly concerning agriculture in general and plant protection in particular. It concerns the application of food safety and animal and plant health regulations. It not only recognizes governments’ right to take SPS measures but also stipulates that they must be based on science, should be applied only to the extent necessary to protect human, animal or plant life or health and should not arbitrarily or unjustifiably discriminate between members where identical or similar conditions prevail.
