In spray tanning, a tanning solution is applied by a technician using an airbrush or a spray gun (turbine systems) or, automatically by a spray tan booth. The tanning solution contains an active ingredient, Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) that reacts with the outer layer of skin, producing a golden brown color. The pigments resulting from a spray tan DO NOT provide UV protection. Some solutions do include sunscreen in the formulation. With most solutions the maximum generation of color is reached within about 12 hours, so the color will continue to darken after the initial application. Tanning solutions also typically have a bronzer that provides an immediate tan effect. When using an airbrush or spray gun, this instant color helps insure even coverage.
