What is Spey Casting?
Spey casting is a technique probably developed on the Scottish River Spey in the mid 1800’s. Recently is has become a fast-growing part of fly fishing in the United States. What is unique about spey casting is that all casts are performed without a back cast, making it especially useful on streams where there is limited room for a back cast. While the conventional image of spey casting is with the use of a two-handed spey rod, spey techniques can be applied with a single handed rod. Spey casting adds a whole new dimension to roll casting and can be a great addition to your fly casting toolkit. It’s not uncommon in your fly fishing ventures for you to have obstructions such as trees, bushes or rocky cliffs behind you that requires a cast with little to no back cast. Spey casting techniques are the means to cast longer distances with limited back cast room. For those fly fishermen that like the style and grace that comes with the fly casting, spey casting adds both to your fly cast. Why
