What is special about the makeup of the UC Law Degree?
Every accredited law program must cover 11 essential areas that are required for legal practice. Beyond that, most law degrees offer a wide range of electives that further develop these areas. In contrast to these generalist’ approaches, UC’s law degree is more commercially focused. For example, few law degrees require that students do Taxation Law. Yet the University of Canberra, requires students to undertake a full year of tax as well as a full year of Company Law. It is our belief, confirmed by our alumni and employers of our graduates, that this approach results in students with a thorough grounding in commercial law as well as highly honed skills such as statutory interpretation and problem analysis. In addition, our small group work and heavy emphasis on technology, especially electronic research, means that UC law graduates are prepared not only for law as it was and is practiced, but also for the future.
