What Is Special About The Basal Layer Of The Epidermis?
The basal layer of the epidermis is one of the four main layers of cells. It is the Stratum Germinativum or Basale and is the inner layer or deepest layer of skin. It separates the Dermis from the bottom membrane called the basement membrane. The cells are cube shaped and have a large center called the nucleus and produce Keratin. Keratin is the basic source of color in our skin. Enter (epidermis basal layer) into your search bar and you find a number of sites, which give you good information about the Epidermis and all its layers. Each layer is clearly explained. Some sites have great graphics, you can see basil layer cells and learn how the layers of our skin work together to protect us. Be careful as you read because you will find as you read the words (two layers, four layers and five layers) if you read carefully, you will realize these numbers are being used as the number of layers, within the layers of our skin.
