What is special about Hmong and Mien?
Hmong is primarily an oral language and there are disagreements about how it should be written. This is hard to believe for English speakers who cannot imagine a language that is not automatically a written language. There are similar issues with Mien. Therefore, translations into either of these languages represent a serious compromise. There is absolutely no guarantee that a Hmong or Mien speaker will be able to understand a document written in the scripts used to represent the sounds of these languages.
