Spaying is a surgical procedure called an ovariohysterectomy, eliminating the ability to reproduce and removing the primary source of production of the female hormones. It is a routine procedure requiring overnight hospitalization. Spaying is best done when the female is not in heat.

Spaying is the sugical removal of a female animal’s reproductive organs (ovaries and uterus) so that she cannot reproduce. The removal of the ovaries prevents the undesirable oestrus behaviour. It is this oestrus which causes male dogs to be attracted to the female and pre-disposes her to being injured in fights or getting lost when out searching for mates.
