What is spam?
Spam refers to the same thing over and over again. It originally applied to massively cross-posted Usenet articles, but has been expanded to include most forms of net abuse. It is commonly used to refer to Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, (UCE), Unsolicited Bulk E-mail (UBE), or Usenet abuse such as commercial posts in a newsgroup where ads are not welcome, off-topic posts or cross-posting to more than five newsgroups. The term spam comes from a skit by Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
SPAM in unsolicited “junk” email sent to large numbers of people to promote products or services. The most common SPAM emails are chain letters, work-at-home schemes, weight loss claims, credit repair offers, advance fee loan scams and adult entertainment. SPAM is not only unwanted, annoying and time-consuming but it is also getting worse every year.
‘SPAM’ or ‘Unsolicited Commercial email’ is e-mail that is both unsolicited by the recipient and sent in substantively identical form to many recipients. A common synonym for spam is unsolicited bulk e-mail (UBE). Some definitions of spam specifically include the aspects of email that it is unsolicited and sent in bulk. We do not tolerate the sending of unsolicited commercial email or “SPAM” at all.
