What is spaced decking?
Spaced decking is a system used to allow cedar shingles to breathe. Many older homes have spaced decking and cedar shingles beneath their asphalt roofs and the homeowners may not realize it. a 2″ gap between the decking boards can be seen from inside your attic and is not easily detected from outside the home. In order to install a new roof on a home that has spaced decking, new plywood must be installed over the spaced decking so that the shingles may lay flat. This can be very costly and should be determined before you sign any contract with a contractor. A 30 square roof can be approximately $4,500 and quite a shock if unexpected.
