Wicked is based on a Gregory McGuire book of the same name. Stephen Schwartz acquired the stage rights in 1998 after meeting with McGuire. Working with Winnie Holzman, Schwartz took a year to develop the plot. The book, lyrics and score were then written through a series of developmental readings.
