What is SomatoEmotional Release?

SomatoEmotional Release is a form of bodywork that provides a safe and supportive environment for a person to explore somatic (body) memories or emotions that the body is holding onto. Often this memory or emotion is preventing them from healing from a past injury or trauma, be it physical or emotional.

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that expands on the principles of CranioSacral Therapy to help rid the mind and body of the residual effects of trauma. Joint research conducted by Dr. John Upledger and biophysicist Dr. Zvi Karni led to the discovery that the body often retains the imprint of physical forces from accidents, injuries, and emotional shock. The dysfunctional area is frequently isolated in what is called an energy cyst. Although clearing negative memories and emotions is helpful in resolving the disturbance, Dr. Upledger and Dr. Karni found that total rehabilitation was not always achieved. Even when a reasonably healthy body adapts to energy cyst, extra energy is required to perform normal functions. As time passes, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms begin to appear and, over time, become more difficult to suppress. Using SER techniques the therapist used manual and verbal processing queues to help release these patter

SomatoEmotional Release (or SER) is a body-mind technique which allows not just mechanical or body memories to be released, but sometimes significant emotional components as well. It’s worth mentioning briefly how SER came about. Dr. John Upledger, in his work with autistic children at Michigan State University in the mid-70’s, noticed that many of these children would spontaneously move into positions that would facilitate the release of old patterns, memories and situations with an emotional component. These positions were spontaneous, without plan and would sometimes be facilitated by more than one therapist who was present. As Dr. John investigated further into SomatoEmotional Release in his private practice, he found that dialogue could also be a key factor in the SER process, with the opportunity, when it arose, to speak with various parts of the body, a memory from the past, or even someone’s ‘inner intelligence’ or ‘inner physician’ who basically knew the whole story of someone

SomatoEmotional Release is a concept, and a group of techniques developed by the founder of CranioSacral Therapy Dr. John Upledger, in conjunction with biophysicist Dr. Zvi Karni.

SomatoEmotional Release (SER) is a therapeutic process that helps rid the body and mind of the residual effects of past trauma and associated negative responses. In the late 1970s, John E. Upledger, DO, OMM, and biophysicist Zvi Karni, PhD, discovered that the body often retains, rather than dissipates, physical forces resulting from an accident, injury or emotional trauma. The trauma causes the body to isolate the dysfunctional area, creating what Dr. Upledger has termed an “Energy Cyst.” Although a reasonably healthy body can work and adapt to Energy Cysts, extra energy will be required to perform normal bodily functions. As years pass, the adaptive pattern of the body loses its effectiveness. Symptoms and dysfunctions begin to accumulate and become increasingly difficult to ignore or suppress. SER works to assist patients toward the physical identification and elimination of these Energy Cysts by enabling the re-experience and thereby resolution of the unpleasant incidents. Top of P
