Soils are the foundation for many built structures and play a role in the support of every building structure not supported on rock, from high-rise buildings to superhighways, to buried utilities. Every structure inherits its strength from the underlying soils. Many performance problems and inefficient cost decisions can be traced to a lack of understanding and the resulting poor performance of soil compaction. A key element of the strength of soils is proper compaction. Poorly compacted soils are the source of many construction failures. Poorly compacted embankments can lead to cracked concrete foundations and walls, as well as footing failures. They are also the source of many pavement failures.
